Hair Extensions and where do they come from?

My name is Tamera Sanders. I am a cosmetologist and the owner of Bundles of Glam. I am on a quest. I want my consumers to know where hair extensions come from. My goal with this blog is to be transparent about hair extensions and their origin. There are so many different textures of hair extensions. Is it Virgin, Remy, Indian, Chinese or Brazilian? There is such a misconception of names, origin and textures. I want consumers to know that the name of certain textures does mean that it is the origin.

This may not be glamorous, but it will be informative.

I knew from the start that I wanted to sell Indian Hair Extensions. It is a very familiar product. I have been using Raw Indian Hair extensions for almost 17 years. Sourcing Indian Hair is the most ethical way for me. Raw Indian hair, especially South Indian hair can be expensive, so in the past few years I have been testing so many vendors looking for more affordable quality hair extensions and wigs to add to Bundles of Glam. I found out how you can easily get bamboozled if you have not done your research.

99% of human hair come from Southeast Asia and India. They do not source hair from Brazil, Peru, or Malaysia. Can you believe that? You probably don’t, but it is true. Most of the vendors label the hair Brazilian, Peruvian or Malaysian to make it sound more appealing, instead of saying Chinese hair. Brazilian, Peruvian and Malaysian natives do not cut their hair in abundance to supply the demand for these textures.

Honestly, there are three types of hair.

Virgin- (unprocessed cuticle aligned hair) Virgin Human Hair has been defined as hair that has never been chemically processed in any way, making the hair far more superior to Remy hair. Virgin hair, although it is more expensive than Remy hair, it can stay longer, and looks more natural. You should treat it like your own hair.

Remy hair that is not considered virgin hair, is still 100% real human hair but it has been processed after being harvested from the donor. ... Remy hair is only lightly processed hence Remy Human Hair extensions should last a long time with regular maintenance.

Non-Remy Hair (non-cuticle aligned hair). They call non-Remy hair Soaked hair, because they have to make it silky with chemicals in order to sell. It is very difficult to color. This is the worst hair to purchase.

Now that some of the consumers are catching on. The manufacturers have created a grading system, 6A, 7A, 8A up to 12A. The crazy part about this, is that the system was not created for you. This system is created for the treaters and manufacturers. The treaters need to know the percentage of length is in each bundle. For example, if you have a 16 inch it might be 60% 16”, 20% 14” and 20% 12” in that bundle. The next 16 inch bundle may be 80% 16” and 20% 14”. This is how the vendor creates a grading system. They vendors use it as a method to up sale. It does not matter if it is 6A or 12A. It is the same hair. The grade of the hair did not change. Just a little tidbit for you. This system was created for non-Remy hair.
